New Zealand is a long, narrow country lying north-south with mountain ranges running much of its length.
New Zealand covers 268,680 sq km, slightly larger than the United Kingdom, or about the size of Japan, two thirds the size of California.
It is made up of three main islands, the North Island, South Island and Stewart Island.
